WHAT IS A STUDY PERMIT?
In order to come to Canada as an international student, you will need to obtain a valid study permit. This is a temporary visa document issued by the federal government that grants you access to the country for the duration of your studies.
HOW CAN I OBTAIN A CANADIAN STUDY PERMIT?
You may only apply for a study permit if you have been accepted to your host institution. Once you receive your letter of acceptance, you are eligible to apply directly to the federal government for a study permit. It is important to note that if you wish to study in Quebec, you must first obtain a Certificat D’Acceptation du Quebec (CAQ) before you can apply for a study permit.
CONVINCING THE VISA OFFICER
A study permit is a temporary visa document by nature. This means that it will expire after a set amount of time, and that you will have to leave the country when it expires. To be issued a study permit, you must convince the visa officer that you will respect the conditions of your study permit, including returning home when it expires after your studies.
You must also convince the visa officer that there is a good reason for you to want to study in Canada, rather than in your home country. Unfortunately, there are countless students whose applications are denied because they could not give a convincing enough reason to the visa officials. Providing a compelling narrative for why you want to come to Canada, and why you can be trusted to return to your home country when your visa expires, is necessary when applying to come to Canada on any temporary visa.
